Jon Peddie, president of graphics market research firm Jon Peddie Research, called the IBM-Nvidia deal “great news. This is verification and validation of the Tesla product as being a viable server supercomputer accelerator. Having a name like IBM really puts a stamp of approval on it, and you’ll see other companies following that,” he told InternetNews.com. “I expect to see Dell, HP and Sun all doing that. Not necessarily with Tesla, but adding GPU computing.” It’s also good for Nvidia’s rival, ATI, because it, too, has a strong play. The difference is that ATI supports OpenCL while Nvidia supports OpenCL plus…

Nvidia Corp. is expected to launch Friday the first chip using its next-generation graphics technology, bringing a big leap in performance from its current products and heating up a rivalry with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Despite AMD's early lead, delays at chip manufacturers offered Nvidia a reprieve from a drop in market share. In the fourth quarter, Nvidia increased its position in the desktop GPU market, raising its market share to 64.8% from 62.1% a year ago, according to Jon Peddie Research.

He predicts, in the future, we would draw as much — or as little — computing power as we need from the cloud. To project stereoscopic 3-D images, a TV or monitor needs to have a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz, notes Jon Peddie president of Jon Peddie Research. While new televisions typically can do that, few older ones can, he said. So most consumers will need to buy a new TV or computer monitor to watch 3-D programming, and many may be reluctant to go through the upgrade cycle in the near future after recently replacing their old analog TVs with digital ones. "That'll be a barrier," Peddie acknowledges.
