AMD and Sony are having giggling fits

Fastest ramp for a new console ever

Yesterday after AMD reported record sales, during the Q&A, Lisa Su, AMD’s CEO, was asked how are console sales doing? In her usual polite manner, she said they were doing ok, and that Q2 is not a typically big quarter for console sales—she could hardly retain a smirk.

Today, Veronica Rogers, SVP, Global Sales and Business Operations, said, “We are thrilled to announce that as of July 18th, 2021, we have sold more than 10 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally. This makes PS5 the fastest-selling console in the history of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).”

Sony and AMD worked together to wrestle the supply chain and managed to pump out enough parts to keep up, just barely, with the unprecedented demand for the new console. “Everyone at SIE put their all into making the PlayStation experience better than ever,” added Rogers. “I’d like to call out a couple of teams who made especially important contributions. Our Product Development team delivered amazing innovations including lightning-fast SSD, immersive 3D audio, and the dynamic DualSense controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.”

Since the console launched in November, PlayStation Studios accelerated titles that showcased the capabilities of PS5. “Looking ahead,” said Rogers, “the lineup of exclusive games coming from PlayStation Studios includes a new God of War from Santa Monica Studios, Gran Turismo 7 from Polyphony Digital, and Horizon Forbidden West from Guerrilla Games. Some of the highly anticipated games from SIE’s partners include Battlefield 2042 from Electronic Arts, DEATHLOOP from Bethesda, Far Cry 6 From Ubisoft, and Kena: Bridge of Spirits from Ember Lab.

That’s a lot of games, and games are what sell consoles, not chips. But the chips attract the game developers, and AMD’s customized APUs combined with a blazingly fast SSD have made the PS5 very attractive to developers.

We expect Sony and AMD to continue breaking records and are looking forward to getting our hands on one of these new machines.
