AMD’s new AI PC GPU, Ryzen AI Pro 300

AMD has introduced its third-generation Ryzen AI Pro 300-series mobile processors, built on Zen 5 architecture, designed to improve business productivity with advanced AI features such as live captioning, translation, and image generation. The series integrates AMD’s XDNA 2 architecture for enhanced AI processing, offering over 50 NPU TOPS. Optimized for enterprise PCs running Microsoft’s Copilot+ AI assistant, these processors provide improved CPU performance, extended battery life, and security features, with new systems from OEMs such as HP and Lenovo expected in 2025.

AMD has announced its third generation of commercial AI mobile processors, the Ryzen AI Pro 300 series. These processors are designed to enhance business productivity with advanced AI features, including live captioning and language translation for conference calls, as well as AI image generation capabilities. The new series offers improved AI compute performance compared to previous generations and is optimized for everyday business workloads.

The Ryzen AI Pro 300 series incorporates AMD’s new Zen 5 architecture, which provides enhanced CPU performance. These processors are specifically designed for enterprise PCs that utilize Microsoft’s Copilot+ AI assistant. The top model in the series, the Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 375, offers performance improvements in various metrics compared to competing processors.

A key feature of the new series is the integration of AMD’s XDNA 2 architecture, which powers the neural processing unit (NPU). This allows the processors to deliver 50-plus NPU TOPS (trillion operations per second) of AI processing power, meeting and exceeding Microsoft’s requirements for Copilot+ AI PCs. The processors are manufactured using a 4nm process and include advanced power management features to extend battery life for mobile use.

AMD Ryzen AI Pro 300-series CPUs.

AMD is expanding its commercial ecosystem with these new processors. OEM partners are developing new PCs powered by the Ryzen AI Pro 300 series, which are expected to be available later this year. These systems aim to leverage local AI processing capabilities, particularly in conjunction with Microsoft Copilot+.

The company introduced its first AI PC GPU in 2023 but missed the Microsoft AI PC rollout slot, which Qualcomm grabbed. With the Pro 300, AMD has almost exceeded Qualcomm’s NPU TOPS.

The Ryzen AI Pro 300, Strix, processor is a true SoC with three major processors that can be applied to AI workloads. Some AI apps were designed on and for a CPU; others use a GPU, and the newer ones look for an NPU.

Microsoft has expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with AMD, highlighting how the Ryzen AI Pro processors enhance AI-driven experiences in Windows 11. Features such as Improved Windows Search, Recall, and Click to Do are designed to make PCs more intuitive and responsive. Microsoft also emphasizes security enhancements, including the Microsoft Pluton security processor and Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security.

HP and Lenovo have announced new products incorporating the Ryzen AI Pro 300-series processors. HP is introducing the EliteBook X next-gen AI PC, while Lenovo has unveiled the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD. Both companies emphasize the AI computing power, enhanced security, and battery life offered by these new systems.

AMD has expanded its Pro Technologies lineup with new security and manageability features. These include Cloud Bare Metal Recovery for seamless system recovery via the cloud, Supply Chain Security (AMD Device Identity) for improved traceability, and Watch Dog Timer for enhanced system resiliency. Additionally, AMD offers AI-based malware detection through partnerships with select ISVs.

The Ryzen AI Pro 300-series processors are designed to meet enterprises’s increasing demands for more computing power and efficiency. They aim to handle everyday tasks and demanding workloads, while providing extended battery life for mobile use.

These new processors represent AMD’s continued efforts to innovate in the commercial PC space, particularly in the realm of AI-enabled computing. By combining CPU performance improvements, dedicated AI processing capabilities, and enhanced security features, AMD aims to provide a comprehensive solution for businesses looking to leverage AI in their day-to-day operations, while maintaining high levels of productivity and security.

The early tests run by AMD indicate the Ryzen AI 7 Pro 360 CPU will be 30% faster (based on Cinebench n-thread tests) than Intel’s Core Ultra 7 with vPro 165U, and the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 375 CPU will be 40% faster.

The new 4nm processor will appear in over 100 new AI notebooks in 2025.
