AMD has released its latest Adrenalin Edition Preview Driver, featuring AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 (AFMF 2), a significant upgrade to its frame-generation technology. AFMF 2 introduces AI-driven enhancements, reduced latency, and improved performance across thousands of games. It supports AMD Radeon RX 6000- and 7000-series GPUs and select Ryzen processors with Radeon graphics. New features include customizable settings, compatibility with Radeon Chill, support for borderless full screen, and expanded game compatibility. AMD is releasing AFMF 2 as a technical preview to gather user feedback and further refine the technology.
AMD introduced its Fluid Motion Frames tech for developers in September 2023. AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) frame-generation technology is integrated into AMD software drivers. This feature aimed to boost frame rates and enhance gameplay smoothness, potentially giving players a competitive edge. AFMF is a key component of AMD’s HYPR-RX (High Performance Radeon RX) suite, which AMD said would allow gamers to easily activate a range of performance-enhancing features. By enabling HYPR-RX, users can automatically leverage AFMF along with other optimizations to significantly improve both frames per second (FPS) and overall system responsiveness.
The company has recently released its latest Adrenalin Edition Preview Driver, featuring new technologies and updates currently under development, including AFMF 2—a major advancement in frame-generation technology, says AMD.
AMD says AFMF works across thousands of games and is supported by AMD Radeon RX 6000-and 7000-series graphics cards, select AMD Ryzen processors with Radeon graphics, and claims gamers love using AMD HYPR-RX with AFMF to generate exceedingly fast, playable frame rates at higher resolutions. AMD touts AFMF 2 as a major enhancement to their frame-generation technology. This update introduces several key improvements:
- New optimizations and customizable settings for enhanced frame generation
- AI-driven enhancements for better image quality
- Reduced latency and improved overall performance
- Compatibility with AMD Radeon Chill
- Support for borderless full-screen mode
- Expanded compatibility to include Vulkan and OpenGL games
The company claims these upgrades represent a significant leap forward from the original AFMF. To gather user feedback and further refine the technology, AMD is releasing AFMF 2 as a technical preview. This approach allows gamers to experience the improvements firsthand and contribute to the ongoing development of AFMF 2.
AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 introduces two new modes with optimal settings that can be automatically enabled, while also allowing advanced users customizable options.
The first mode, Search Mode, enhances frame-generation smoothness by improving the fallback mechanism in AFMF 2. Fallback temporarily disables frame generation during high-motion scenes to maintain image quality, which can sometimes cause jitter. The AI-optimized algorithm in Search Mode automatically selects High for resolutions of 1440p and above, and Standard for 1080p, ensuring improved smoothness and image quality compared to AFMF 1.
The second mode, Performance Mode, offers a new Performance setting that reduces AFMF 2’s overhead, making high frame-rate gaming more achievable on a wider range of devices. This is particularly beneficial for integrated graphics and is the default setting on supported AMD Ryzen processors with Radeon graphics. The Quality setting used in AFMF 1 remains the default for supported discrete desktop and mobile graphics boards.
AMD has also made some notable improvements in reducing the latency added by frame generation with this latest version of AFMF. These improvements apply across the board when using AFMF 2, no matter the settings mode, resolution, or hardware used. This makes the experience when using AMD HYPR-RX with AFMF 2 feel even smoother, and not just look smoother. Check out the improvements in latency in Cyberpunk 2077, where AFMF 2 combined with in-driver AMD Radeon Anti-Lag technology delivers on average 28% lower latency at 4K using the Ray Tracing: Ultra graphics preset when compared to AFMF 1.3.
AFMF 2 now supports borderless full-screen mode on AMD Radeon RX 7000- and Radeon 700M-series graphics boards. The technology has also expanded its compatibility to include games using Vulkan and OpenGL, increasing the number of supported titles.
AFMF 2 integrates with AMD Radeon Chill, allowing users to set a driver-controlled FPS cap. When Radeon Chill is enabled after AFMF 2, it automatically sets the native FPS cap to half of the AMD FreeSync monitor’s maximum refresh rate. After AFMF 2 applies frame generation, Radeon Chill prevents the FPS from exceeding the monitor’s maximum refresh rate, avoiding screen tearing and maintaining image quality.
AMD recommends using AFMF 2 with Radeon Anti-Lag for scenarios where the expected maximum FPS will not reach the monitor’s max refresh rate. For games where graphics settings may produce frame rates exceeding the monitor’s refresh rate, AMD suggests using AFMF 2 with Radeon Chill.
AFMF 2 is supported on AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based graphics solutions and newer.
