Jon Peddie Research has just released its annual GPU developments report. It is a summary of GPU developments for 2020 and includes announcements by the leading GPU suppliers. Although we think it is through, we do not claim it to be exhaustive of each and every announcement made by the suppliers.
The information is presented in chronological order, by quarter.
The GPU market is, has been, and probably always will be a dynamic segment frequently disturbed with surprises. Some of the disturbances in 2020 were:
Intel announced in late 2017 their entry into the dGPU segment (they’ve been in the iGPU market for over 25 years). They said it will put them in a better competitive position against AMD and Nvidia in all PC, server, workstation, and HPC segments. In late 2020 the company showed its first implementations of a dGPU.
In late 2020, AMD introduced its new Big Navi GPU product line, putting AMD back in the high-end segment.
Nvidia rolled out its big Ampere GPU in four models, a GPU-computer version, and three consumer versions are discussed.
Qualcomm announced four new SoCs with new GPUs during the year
Arm announced two new designs and so did Imagination Technologies.
Apple surprised a few people with their new SoC and GPU announcement.
Three New GPU architectures were proposed, and a few new companies have declared their intentions.
The number of GPU suppliers increased to 16, however, we think the number of GPU suppliers will reach 19 in 2021.
The GPU is ubiquitous and can be found in almost every device and system imaginable. Some of the developments and associated events are in this report—may the GPU be with you.
The 277-page report, which includes 39 tables and 167 figures and illustrations, is available now for $500.00
