MediaTek has unveiled the Dimensity 9400, its latest flagship smartphone chipset designed for edge-AI applications, gaming, photography, and other advanced features. This fourth-generation flagship mobile SoC represents a significant advancement in performance, leveraging a second-generation All Big Core design based on Arm’s v9.2 CPU architecture, combined with cutting-edge GPU and NPU technologies.

The Dimensity 9400’s architecture includes one Arm Cortex-X925 core running at over 3.62GHz, alongside three Cortex-X4 and four Cortex-A720 cores. This configuration delivers improved single-core and multi-core performance compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300. Manufactured using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, the chip offers enhanced power efficiency, contributing to extended battery life in devices.

Joe Chen, president at MediaTek, emphasized the chip’s role in enabling AI applications and supporting generative AI technology through on-device LoRA training and video generation. The Dimensity 9400 builds on MediaTek’s growing market share and aims to provide flagship performance in an efficient design.

The chipset incorporates MediaTek’s 8th Generation NPU, introducing several innovations in generative AI performance. It supports on-device LoRA training, high-quality on-device video generation, and developer support for agentic AI. These features allow for faster processing of large language models (LLMs) while maintaining power efficiency.

A key component of the Dimensity 9400 is the new Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), designed to enhance traditional AI applications into more sophisticated agentic AI applications. MediaTek is collaborating with developers to create a unified interface that efficiently manages AI agents, third-party APKs, and models for both edge AI and cloud services. This approach aims to streamline development and foster a new ecosystem of agentic AI applications.

For gaming, the Dimensity 9400 features a 12-core Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU, offering improved raytracing performance and support for opacity micromaps (OMM) to deliver realistic effects. The GPU provides enhanced peak performance and power savings compared to its predecessor. The chipset also incorporates HyperEngine technology for super resolution and picture quality, developed in collaboration with Arm Accurate Super Resolution (ASR).

In terms of imaging capabilities, the Dimensity 9400 includes MediaTek Imagiq 1090, enabling HDR video recording across the entire zoom range. The chip’s Smooth Zoom technology facilitates capturing moving subjects, while also reducing power consumption during photo and video capture.

The Dimensity 9400 represents MediaTek’s ongoing efforts to advance mobile chip technology, focusing on AI capabilities, gaming performance, and imaging features. By integrating these advanced technologies into a single chipset, MediaTek aims to provide smartphone manufacturers with a versatile platform for creating high-performance devices that can meet the evolving demands of consumers in areas such as AI applications, gaming, and mobile photography.
