Over the past year, the introduction of 14 AIB/GPU models by major suppliers has resulted in a mixed reception, with Nvidia’s RTX 4090 standing out despite its high price. Criticisms focus on AIBs below the RTX 4090 in terms of pricing and performance. Nvidia’s RTX 40 series, AMD’s RDNA 3 RX 7000 series, and Intel’s Arc Alchemist GPUs have all played a role in this diverse response. Supply issues, particularly highlighted by the recent launch of the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti, have exposed broader challenges in the market. Notably, Chinese AIBs announced during the year are not included due to unknown availability outside China, discussed further in the GPU Developments 2023 report.
During the past year, 14 AIBs/GPUs were introduced as the latest generation from the three major GPU suppliers. However, not everyone was delighted with this year’s offerings—the exception being Nvidia’s wildly popular RTX 4090, in spite of its high price. Many AIBs below the RTX 4090 (in price and performance) have been criticized as being overpriced and underperforming (compared to a 4090). Nvidia’s RTX 40 series, AMD’s RDNA 3 RX 7000 series, and Intel’s Arc Alchemist GPUs have all contributed to this mixed reception.
Nvidia initiated its Ada Lovelace RTX 40 series with the RTX 4090 in October 2022, followed by the RTX 4080, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4070, RTX 4060 Ti, and RTX 4060. AMD has not finished filling in all the segments of the AIB tree with its RDNA 3 RX 7000 series, and there is speculation that additional RX 7800-class and RX 7700-class AIBs will be announce, possibly at CES 2024. Meanwhile, Intel’s Arc Alchemist AIBs introduced a year ago have been steadily improved with new driver releases for the Arc A380, A770, and A750, while the A580 has vanished. Although the next-generation Battlemage is anticipated in 2024, no specific launch dates, specifications, or prices have been disclosed.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX | 338W | $940 |
Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 | 245W | $1,100 |
Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 | 311W | $1,599 |
AIBs available in 2023, sorted by price.
The recent launch of the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti highlights the challenges in this generation. Supply issues delayed AIB purchases, exposing broader challenges in the market.
The above list doesn’t not include the Chinese AIBs announced during the year because their availability is unknown. It may be possible to find them in China.
We have covered these and other GPUs in our GPU developments 2023 report.
