Description
The GPU, which existed as a multi-chip graphics board in the 1990s and then evolved into a single-chip solution, has grown in complexity, capability, and cost. It can now be found in a dozen or more major market segments, including life-saving, entertainment, scientific, industrial, aerospace, and AI applications. No single processor design has ever spread so far and wide. As its application has spread, so have competitors’ attempts to replace it. That’s normal and healthy, but the GPU concept and the supporting infrastructure are so compelling that it is unlikely to be replaced or sublimated for many decades, if ever.
